Sod Installation for Homeowners in Marlton, Evesham, Mount Laurel & Surrounding Areas of South Jersey
Get a full, green lawn without waiting months for seed to take hold.
If your lawn has bare patches, dead zones from a removed pool, or just never recovered from a rough season, sod is often the most practical path to a healthy, finished-looking yard. At Thomas and Son Landscaping, we install sod for residential properties throughout South Jersey — including Mount Laurel, Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, Voorhees, and Moorestown, NJ. Our process is straightforward: we cut out the old grass, prepare the soil properly, and mate the sod directly to it so the roots have the best possible environment to establish.
We’re an owner-operated company, which means the person who shows up to assess your lawn is the same person accountable for the results. You won’t pay us in full until you’re satisfied — that’s not a marketing line, it’s how we structure every job.
When Does Sod Make More Sense Than Seeding?
Both sod and seeding have their place, and we won’t push you toward one if the other makes more sense for your situation. That said, there are cases where sod is clearly the better call.
If you recently had an above-ground pool removed, seeding that area is rarely effective — the soil is usually compacted, the grade is off, and the exposed patch is too large and too visible to leave to chance for months. Cutting that section out and laying sod gives you a clean, consistent result much faster. The same goes for large dead zones that have essentially become bare soil. Seeding into compacted or damaged ground without proper preparation tends to produce patchy, inconsistent results.
On the other hand, if you’re dealing with scattered thin spots throughout an otherwise healthy lawn, overseeding paired with aeration and topdressing is often the smarter, more cost-effective approach. We’ll give you an honest recommendation based on what your lawn actually needs — not just what’s easiest to sell.
Our Sod Installation Process
A sod installation is only as good as the preparation underneath it. Laying sod over poor soil or uneven ground is one of the most common reasons new turf fails to root properly. Here’s how we approach every installation:
- Cut out the existing grass. We remove the old turf completely before anything else goes down. Leaving dead or struggling grass underneath creates a barrier that prevents the new sod from making good contact with the soil below.
- Prepare the soil. We lay down crushed soil to give the new sod a loose, nutrient-receptive base. This step is critical — compacted or clay-heavy ground makes it much harder for roots to push through and establish.
- Mate the sod to the soil. We lay each piece carefully and press it firmly into contact with the prepared soil beneath. Proper contact is what allows roots to begin anchoring quickly. We make sure seams are tight so the finished lawn looks natural and consistent.
If the area has drainage or grading issues, we can address those as part of the project or as a separate grading service before installation begins. Getting the slope and drainage right before laying sod prevents pooling and uneven settling later on.
Caring for Your New Sod
Once we’ve finished the installation, the work shifts to you for a few weeks — but we won’t leave you guessing about what to do. Here’s what proper sod care looks like in the South Jersey climate:
- Water immediately and consistently. Start watering within 30 minutes of installation. For the first two weeks, water daily to keep the soil moist beneath the sod. The goal is consistent moisture, not soaking — the roots are shallow at first and need steady hydration, not flooding.
- Stay off the lawn. Foot traffic on newly laid sod can disrupt root contact before the grass has had a chance to anchor itself. Give it at least two weeks before walking on it regularly.
- Hold off on mowing. Wait until the sod has visibly knit to the soil — usually around two to three weeks. You can check by gently tugging a corner; if there’s resistance, roots are developing. Mow only when it’s dry, and never cut more than a third of the blade height at once.
- Give it six weeks before heavy use. By the four-to-six-week mark, your sod should be strong enough to handle normal lawn activity and routine maintenance.
